Trumpeter Sergeant-Major Alfred Woolford
The background of this North Irish Horseman is not known, other than that he was born around 1889, probably in England, and may have seen military service prior to joining the North Irish Horse.
Woolford enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 12 June 1914 (regimental number 951, 953 or 954 – later Corps of Hussars No.71177). He remained at the regimental reserve camp at Antrim throughout the war.
Three newspaper reports from 1917 refer to his role in the concert group the North Irish Horse Glee Party, and another from 1915 to his being referee in a friendly football match between the North Irish Horse and Summerfield.
On 6 January 1919 Woolford was discharged, being 'surplus to military requirements, not having suffered impairment since entry into the service' (paragraph 392 (xxv(a), King's Regulations).
